Principal: Ryan Harding
Welcome to Iroquois Intermediate School! This building is affectionately know as “The II” and houses students in grades 4 and 5 in an elementary setting. In addition to academics, major emphasis is placed on social and emotional learning. In this way, the whole child is tended to at The II.
Much like the curriculum of our primary buildings, Iroquois Intermediate is focused on the development of literacy skills including reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our reading instruction focuses on strengthening word recognition and the development of language comprehension skills to help students become fluent, engaged readers who find joy in reading. Social studies topics are embedded in our literacy block, and we offer students an engaging, hands-on science curriculum to build strong background knowledge, which further strengthens our students’ ability to read and comprehend.
Our enVision MATH program is aligned to the NYS Next Gen Learning Standards and helps us meet the increased expectations for a more rigorous program. Our curriculum introduces students to mathematical concepts and gives them opportunities to practice and master these skills each year.
Our special area classes, which include Art, Library, Music, Physical Education, and Technology (computer skills). These classes provide opportunities for students to showcase their creative-arts talents, further their love of reading, deepen their appreciation and skill in music, excel through physical activities, and develop proficiency in the use of technology. We also offer Chorus as a required class for grade 4, along with opportunities in Band and Orchestra for 4th graders who choose to join an ensemble. Band, Chorus and Orchestra are all offered as electives for 5th grade students. We run a six-day schedule (A-F) and the letter days are listed on the District Calendar and on the back of your child's take-home folder.
At Iroquois Intermediate, we truly value the opportunity we have each day to develop good students and good human beings. Our approach is to interact positively with all members of our school community on a regular basis, to see challenges as opportunities for growth, and to strive to get at least a little better in every way with each passing day. We will be developing our Guidelines for Success that will focus on our core values with the goal of helping our students become positive, responsible, and contributing members of our school community. We also believe in explicitly teaching about the concepts of perseverance and resiliency in the face of challenges and seek opportunities for students to focus on their effort in all they do at The II. We are also very fortunate to have a full-time school counselor available to support students as needed throughout the school year and to teach explicit lessons centered on Social Emotional Learning.
Iroquois Intermediate is very fortunate to have establish a brand new Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) that provides wonderful activities and opportunities for our students. The PTO arranges for or supports school assemblies, initiatives, field trips, and holiday activities. If you have not already done so, please consider becoming a member of the PTO to support the students here at The II.
I believe that the most important aspect of any successful school is the partnership between the home and the school. If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to meet, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at 716-652-3000 ext. 5000. Thank you.
